Located in the heart of the Norfolk countryside, the vibrant city of Norwich is home to this beautiful garden room belonging to Jane and Stuart Shearer. This exciting project saw the creation of a space to entertain that seamlessly connected to the original features of the home, as Stuart explained. “The project was to create an entertainment come garden room, adjoining the existing grade 2 listed barn to create an uninterrupted view of our garden and countryside”. This design was achieved by using an all-glass walkway, linking the existing barn with the new room. To ensure a seamless design, the garden room was designed with the existing barn in mind, creating a contemporary take on a traditional country barn look. This was achieved by layering rustic materials, with a natural colour pallet and exposed beams to create a traditional barn style, before adding pops of colour, and modern design elements to add a contemporary twist. When discussing the inspiration for the design, Stuart went on to say…

“The design inspiration was to create a cart-shed look from the front of the building which would look like it had been there for many years, with glass sliding doors to the back garden and a modern glass walkway attached to the grade 2 barn, giving it a contemporary feel from the rear of the property. The goal was to achieve a large entertainment room and space where we have a bar bistro type feel, with a breath-taking view”

When it came to the flooring, the Shearers wanted to draw upon the colours from the barn area, so that the design flowed through from the old to the new space. To that end, they chose V4’s Frozen Umber herringbone from the Deco Parquet collection. Using a herringbone parquet style of flooring, the couple were not only able to achieve this seamless look but could also establish the new design by moving away from the plank style of flooring that previously sat in the barn, described by Stuart as “a stylish departure from planking”.

When explaining why they chose a V4 floor, Stuart explained “Our friends used V4, and we liked their floor so decided to obtain samples which were of ideal colour and size” before going on to explain that they also enjoyed the designs on our Get Inspired page. Stuart then went on to say “we also had a very good introductory telephone call with V4 who were extremely helpful and knowledgeable on wood flooring”.

Installed by flooring design and install specialists We Know Flooring, the Frozen Umber herringbone is complete with a brushed and colour oiled finish, providing not only a rustic look, ideal for this barn design, but also a hardwearing top layer, perfect for entertaining. With muted oak tones creating a timeless yet contemporary design, Stuart described the colour as “superb! Perfect for the style of the room and blends well with existing flooring”.

Connecting the barn and garden room is an all-glass walkway. Not only does this magnificent feature aid in creating a seamless transition from the old to the new space, without disrupting the fantastic views of the garden and countryside, but it also adds a plethora of light, opening up the room and connecting it with the surrounding nature, as Stuart explains: “The glass walkway was constructed to link the old to the new which gives the overall impression of a light bright feel to the new space”.

An impressive characteristic of the design is the oak beams that run across the ceiling of the garden room. Whilst these beams are from a local joinery, as commission by the builders, they bear a very similar resemblance to the original beams in the grade 2 listed barn. With the original beams dating back to circa 1790, the use of rustic timber in the new space helps connect the design throughout the two spaces.

These beams are then contrasted with the modern seating and bistro furniture to add that contemporary feel. Bespoke cabinetry by Tenacity Interiors creates the perfect bar area, including a built-in wine cooler, coffee area and mirror backed shelves, complete with Farrow & Ball colouring in the shade Railings. Situated perfectly by the bar with the views of the countryside, the beautiful matt bronze Calligaris table completes the garden room, creating the perfect space to entertain family and friends.

When discussing how the flooring lived up to their expectations, the couple stated,

“We absolutely love the flooring and feel it sets off the whole room, giving a warm cosy but modern feel, it looks really high quality and is an ideal colour for our new room. For anyone looking for a quality wood floor we would highly recommend the V4 team”
