Wood Floors Are Good For Your Home

Explore V4 Wood Flooring’s top five reasons to have wood flooring in your home.

1. Improved air quality

Wood flooring is naturally hypoallergenic, making it an ideal option for allergy sufferers. Unlike carpet, which can trap dust, pollen, pet hair, and other allergens, wood floors do not harbor debris or odors, contributing to a cleaner, healthier indoor environment.

Wood also possesses natural anti-bacterial properties. It’s no coincidence that butcher’s blocks are traditionally made from wood, particularly oak and pine, which are known to inhibit bacterial growth more effectively than many synthetic surfaces.

As a hygroscopic material, wood absorbs and releases moisture in response to humidity levels. With an average family producing up to 14 litres of water vapour per day, wood helps regulate indoor humidity. While this may cause natural expansion and contraction in solid wood floors, engineered wood flooring is specifically designed to manage these changes. Its cross-ply construction, with layers positioned at 90° angles, greatly limits movement and enhances dimensional stability.

Finally, wood floors typically have lower VOC (volatile organic compound) emissions than many man-made alternatives such as vinyl. These synthetic materials can release harmful substances over time, potentially contributing to respiratory issues, skin irritation, and other health concerns.

2. A timeless design for your home

One of the greatest benefits of installing engineered wood flooring is the timeless elegance it brings to any interior. With its warm, natural charm, wood flooring creates a sophisticated and inviting atmosphere that complements both classic and contemporary styles. Unlike traditional solid wood blocks, engineered wood offers the same authentic look without the same limitations, making it a versatile and practical choice for homes.

Whether you are drawn to a traditional oak finish or prefer a more modern colour palette, we are confident you will find the perfect match within the V4 Wood Flooring collection.

Beyond its visual appeal, hardwood flooring is also a smart investment. Studies show that over 50% of homebuyers are willing to pay more for a property featuring hardwood floors. By choosing engineered wood, you are not only enhancing your current living space, but also adding long-term value to your home.

3. Engineered wood flooring is a fantastic sustainable choice for your home

Engineered wood flooring offers several important sustainability benefits. Its layered construction delivers a higher yield per log compared to solid wood flooring, making more efficient use of natural resources. As one of the few carbon-negative building materials, wood stores carbon absorbed during the tree’s life, preventing it from being released into the atmosphere, even after harvesting.

By choosing timber for flooring, that locked-in carbon is retained for the lifespan of the product. In fact, studies show the carbon stored in a single log can offset the emissions generated during manufacturing, resulting in a low or even negative carbon footprint.

At V4 Wood Flooring, we have made a conscious choice to focus on engineered wood, discontinuing our solid wood ranges. This allows us to maintain the aesthetic and performance of solid wood, while offering greater strength, dimensional stability, and improved environmental efficiency.

As part of our ongoing commitment to sustainability, we also reduced the thickness of our flooring from 15mm to 14mm, decreasing the oak wear layer by 1mm. This small yet significant change increases the yield from each log by 20%, with no compromise to durability, further enhancing the sustainability of every floor we produce.

4. Warmth, Comfort & Texture: The Natural Benefits of Wood Flooring

When choosing flooring for your home, it’s important to select materials that create a welcoming and comfortable environment. One of the standout benefits of wood flooring is its ability to provide a naturally warm feeling underfoot, unlike colder alternatives such as tile or stone. Wood also helps retain and distribute heat more evenly, contributing to a consistent indoor temperature.

Even better, engineered wood flooring is fully compatible with underfloor heating systems, unlike most solid wood floors. This means you can enjoy the warmth of real wood underfoot throughout the colder months, without compromise. Click here to read our full guide on underfloor heating and engineered wood flooring.

Beyond its thermal comfort, wood flooring offers a tactile connection to nature. The surface texture created through brushing techniques can vary from a soft, subtle finish to a more pronounced grain, depending on the design. This natural texture not only enhances the sensory feel of your space but also helps to disguise small scratches or natural wear over time as opposed to a smooth flooring alternative.

5. Built to last

Engineered wood flooring is designed for lasting performance. With proper care and maintenance, a high-quality wood floor can last up to 100 years, far outlasting most other flooring options.

Thanks to its durable surface and real wood layer, our engineered wood floors can be re-oiled or re-lacquered to restore their original beauty even after years of use. It’s a simple, cost-effective way to keep your floors looking fresh and new without the waste and expense of replacement.

SPC flooring offers a slightly longer lifespan than carpet, with premium options lasting 10 to 20 years. However, this cannot be refinished. Once it begins to wear or lose its appearance, it must be fully replaced. In contrast, engineered wood flooring can be rejuvenated, not just replaced.
