Edwardian home with Smoked Oak herringbone
Case Study

Detached Edwardian Home, Southampton

This detached Edwardian residence in Southampton has been thoughtfully renovated to balance period character with contemporary design, introducing the warmth of our Deco Smoked Oak herringbone into its ground floor spaces.

The three-bedroom home offered its new owners all the architectural charm expected of a period property; high ceilings, intricate cornicing, sash windows, and original feature fireplaces.

While the house required modernisation, they were keen to preserve its character, whilst introducing modern elements that would sit harmoniously alongside the original features.

The ground floor of the home comprised two main reception spaces, both rich in character features. They were keen to find a wood floor that could connect these spaces, and create continuity running from the entrance hallway, through to the rear of the home.

After exploring options, they narrowed their choice down to a herringbone style as a classic pattern that would create a natural flow through the home.

The front living room was being designed to be a calm and comforting retreat, layered with neutral, earthy tones, so they wanted a wood floor that would bring a little extra warmth into this space.

In contrast, the rear reception room would embrace a more dramatic palette, with darker blues and a more atmospheric design, something that a darker style of wood floor would also suit well.

Our Smoked Oak herringbone floors from the Deco collection were chosen, introducing rich tonal variation and texture throughout. The floors beautifully complement the home’s period features, whist also sitting comfortably with new modern elements.

Our Smoked Oak herringbone is stored in a smoke filled chamber to naturally age the timber. This darkens the grain to a rich honey tone, complemented with areas of darker oak and occasional streaks of blonde sap wood. The blocks are then brushed and sealed with cured clear oils which enrich the surface and create a warm tactile finish.

In the rear reception, bespoke cabinetry and woodwork have been finished in a bold, inky blue, paired with coordinating wallpaper to create a layered, atmospheric design. The contrast between the deep blue tones and the warmth of the Smoked Oak brings a natural elegance into the room.

The flooring continues in the entrance hallway, and extends into a meticulously designed boot room, where earthy greens sit effortlessly alongside the oak’s warm tones.

The result is a home where Edwardian character has been respected, original features sit comfortably with new modern elements, all brought together with a well-thought colour palette and the Smoked Oak herringbone providing continuity and a natural warmth throughout.
