Looking to create a natural feel for the renovated family living spaces in this 1930’s home, our Deco Brushed Matt Planks were chosen to provide a tactile floor finish.
Sarah Malcolm and her husband moved into this 1930’s home in Surrey ready to create a beautiful family home, with Sarah eight-months pregnant as the sale completed.
“The home needed a huge amount of modernisation, but we could immediately see the potential it had to become a wonderful family home. It was really important for us to create a large, open family space where our son could run around and play. At the same time, we wanted the option to close the doors and enjoy a cosy room together in the evenings.”
The house featured two interlinked reception rooms, which offered the perfect opportunity to design a layout that balanced openness with flexibility. The design approach focused on maintaining a natural flow between the two rooms while incorporating dividing doors so that the front reception room could transform into a cosy evening living space.
To maintain the sense of continuity when the doors are open, the couple wanted a flooring solution that could run seamlessly throughout both rooms.
“I’m a yoga teacher and spend a lot of time barefoot, so I loved the idea of having a real wood floor that feels tactile and natural. We wanted something timeless and versatile that would also be the perfect surface for our son to take his first steps on.”
The couple chose our Deco Brushed Matt planks. These engineered oak floors have a beautifully tactile surface that is created with the application of steel brushes to remove the soft grain from the top layer of the oak surface, following the natural contours of the wood. The resulting rustic top layer is then spray coated with coats of clear lacquer which protect the surface and give the planks their wonderful natural appearance.
“I loved the simplicity of these floors. They feel incredibly natural, and I adore the texture, and how they make the space feel so much longer flowing through the two areas. Whether its yoga time, or play time, they’re incredibly hardwearing and practical to live with.”
When it came to the wider interior design of the family spaces, Sarah drew inspiration from Instagram to develop a soft, calming colour palette.
“I wanted the rooms to feel airy, practical and a little bit zen, but still cosy. It’s always been my dream to have a wood burner, so adding one became a favourite feature of the space.”
The walls were finished in the dusty plaster pink tones of Setting Plaster by Farrow & Ball, creating a soft backdrop for the natural materials used throughout the room. Bespoke rattan-fronted cabinetry and doors were created by a close friend, adding both texture and unique character to the design, whilst also providing practical storage for family life.
“We’ve lived with the floors for some time now and we absolutely love them. They bring exactly the natural, organic feel I was hoping for, offering that beautiful tactile feel underfoot. And they stand up to playtime with no problem at all.”
