An elegant period home in Highgate, London, introduces the light oak tones of Deco Shore Drift Oak Herringbone to its beautifully reimagined spaces.
Enviably located in the heart of Highgate Village, this period property boasts a wealth of original features and character, from its high ceilings and ornate original coving, to the tall windows that fill the home with natural light.
Looking to embrace the home’s charm, whilst modernising the spaces to feel more contemporary and suited to modern living, its owners worked with Varsha Chouhan Interiors to complete a beautiful transformation.
Varsha’s inspiration was to create a soft, refined palette that would sit harmoniously alongside the home’s original features. Organic tones and natural materials have been introduced throughout the living spaces, paired with statement pieces that reflect the period nature and grandeur of the property.
On arrival, the grand entrance’s statement chandelier and Indian floral block-printed wallpaper set the tone for the rest of the home.
“Once I started planning the entrance, I envisaged that a herringbone floor would work so incredibly well in this home. It would naturally lead you through the spaces, providing a nod to the parquet flooring typical of period homes, whilst having a more contemporary feel.”
“The colour palettes created for each space were naturally light, calm and sophisticated. I wanted to find an oak floor that would provide a quiet foundation, whilst still being striking in its own right.”
Varsha selected our Deco Shore Drift Oak. This light oak herringbone floor has been created to give the appearance of raw oak. Its oak surface is simply brushed and then sealed with an invisible natural lacquer, maintaining the woods authenticity, whilst providing a protective surface.
“Its natural tones are what drew me to it. A calming layer that complements everything else in the design effortlessly.”
The floors flow seamlessly from the hallway into the living room, designed as a calm and layered space with soft neutrals and tactile textures, including a sheepskin armchair that invites you to curl up and relax.
The dining space takes full advantage of the generous windows, flooding the room with light and offering views out to the peaceful garden. A little oasis in London, the light oak tones and earthy greens in this space naturally connect you to the outside.

“The home has become such an inviting environment that feels both timeless and contemporary. From the beautiful herringbone flooring, which both I and the client absolutely love, to the little details, everything has been considered to create a cohesiveness and harmonious feel throughout the house.”
