George Clarke’s Remarkable Renovations, Lincolnshire.

From a derelict 1850s bakery to a family home using VIT107 Vale Oak plank, as featured on George Clarke’s Remarkable Renovations

In 2020, Matt purchased a two-bedroom 1850s Victorian home, which came with a derelict bakery that had been left untouched since closing after World War 2. However, this run-down structure was soon given a new lease of life as Matt embarked on the extraordinary project of renovating the bakery with our Vale Oak plank and transforming it into a home for his sister, Charlene, and nephew, Louis, after his sister had to give up work to become Louis full-time carer.

The renovation was documented by Channel 4’s ‘George Clarke's Remarkable Renovations’, following Matt’s ups and downs throughout the project, including navigating working full time and remortgaging his own home to finish the project for his sister and nephew.

Before the renovation, the bakery had been derelict for several decades. Rich in history, it was first established in 1850 and had four separate rooms. After 14 months of work, the former bakery had been transformed completely into a modern home, complete with an open-plan kitchen and two bedrooms for Charlene and Louis.

The renovation was kept on one floor to ensure Louis could access the entire home, as Matt explained – “It would be so nice for Louis to have that one level to walk from his bedroom through to the living room
for Louis to have that independence”. With this in mind, it was important that the family found a floor that was hearing-wearing and durable, without compromising on the aesthetics.

To that end, Matt chose VIT107 Vale Oak from our Alpine collection to create a cohesive feel throughout the home. With mixed-length planks ranging from 300-1200mm, Vale Oak utilises every inch of the tree in production for a sustainable flooring solution that adds immediate character to any room, whilst the plank style draws the eye along the space, helping to add space to any room.

The end result was a heartwarming quaint family home for Charlene and Louis to live in, with two bedrooms and a beautiful contemporary-rustic inspired open plan kitchen come family room for the whole family to enjoy. The blue shaker-style kitchen added a colour to the design, sitting effortlessly against the white walls, which balanced perfectly with the matching oak beams and flooring throughout that home – which also offered a subtle nod to the building’s fascinating heritage.
