A garage is converted into a beautiful new living space that features the light oak tones of Chevron Seashell wood floors
Olivia and her husband already had plans to complete a large open plan kitchen and dining room renovation in their home which would create a wonderful space to socialise and enjoy family life with their first child on the way. However the couple decided that they would love to still have a cosy living room space and made the decision to convert their garage. Olivia explains, Our garage really was just a bit of a dumping ground and it had the potential to be quite easily converted to link to the home and provide us with a lovely living room.
âMy husband is a very hands-on property developer and had completed all of our renovation work so far on this home so the next project on our list quickly became converting our garage.â
The conversion was reasonably straight forward, using the existing floor space of the garage and adding a new connecting door to the home’s hallway. Matt had turned the space from a cold and unfriendly garage into a blank canvas for a beautiful living space in under three weeks. To fill the room with heaps of natural light we replaced the garage door opening with full height windows, and as I was planning on creating a little home working area within the room we switched out an old side access door to another full height window pane which would give my working area plenty of natural light and pretty views outside.
âFor the dĂ©cor in here I wanted it to feel very calming so this space would feel like a lovely quiet retreat from the rest of the house. Matt had finished the building work literally as the first lockdown started so finishing all of the dĂ©cor in this room would become my lockdown mission, as well as coping with my first pregnancy.â
âFor the flooring we knew we wanted something that would be light to lift the room and enhance the feeling of space. Iâd looked at herringbone options but when I saw V4âs Chevron style of flooring I knew it would be perfect for the space. It looked really natural and the block size was larger than some of the herringbone styles Iâd looked at and that really appealed to me. Matt completed the installation, it was hard work but all worth it as we both love the finished look. V4âs Chevron collection has been designed to be a modern take on 17th Century French Herringbone. The engineered oak blocks measure 90mm x 610mm with a tongue and groove profile for a 45° angle installation pattern. The 3mm thick durable top oak layer is finished with a hardwax oil for a natural protective surface that gives the floor a soft muted glow. Olivia has completed beautiful interior design inside the new space where a cosy seating area now lives where the family can relax and watch TV, along with a peaceful home working area. The design palette builds on simple white walls and introduces soft pastels and textures, contrasting with the darker tones of the new window frames and internal door. The garages existing fuse boards have been cleverly concealed inside a new cupboard which also creates extra storage. Walls feature Valspar paint in Brilliant White, there is a cosy corner sofa from Ikea, Butterley Barn provided the curtains and wall art was selected from Poster Lounge. I was struggling to find a desk that felt just right for the space, so inspired by some DIY desks Iâd seen on Instagram I actually made the fluted desk design myself, all for less than ÂŁ100! Our first baby arrived while I was adding the finishing touches to the room, and with the new open plan kitchen work underway it was so lovely to have this calm and quiet space to spend time with her. Itâs also been a joy to finally have a proper desk to work from. Itâs so much easier to focus working in here rather than on a laptop in the kitchen. The room has so much natural light during the day which is wonderful, and then feels so cosy when we snuggle up in here for the evening.
âWeâre absolutely thrilled with the wood floors too. The soft muted tones really have brought all of the design elements together and they have been a breeze to look after. Weâre so happy we made the decision to convert the garage. The work all took shape so quickly thanks to Matt, and now we have a lovely living room to relax in â itâs just how I envisaged it.â
