Deco Frozen Umber wood floors deliver soft serene bedroom style in this London home

Angela Lund and her family moved into this Edwardian Terrace in Hither Green, near Lewisham in London, about two and a half years ago. It was last summer that they turned their thoughts to beginning an upgrade on the home to put their own stamp on it. First on the list was a loft conversion to open up a very small and unusable loft room into a large master bedroom with ensuite. "Once building work was underway I knew I wanted quite a contemporary and minimalist décor for the master bedroom with clean white walls and simple furnishings - almost boutique hotel style. With that in mind the choice of flooring was essential as this would be the main backdrop adding soft, warm tones into the room."

“I’m not particularly keen on carpet so I spent a lot of time online looking at wood options and the colour choices available today. I wanted something that would maintain a traditional feel yet offer a more contemporary tone.”

After doing some research Angela visited her local flooring retailer, Blackheath Flooring, to view options first-hand and was immediately drawn to V4’s Deco collection, and in particular the warm tones of Frozen Umber.

“I’d seen a lot of bleached style wood floors online and liked the finish, but many of these were too light. I wanted a slightly warmer colour which is exactly what this floor had. I went away and did a bit more research, looked at the floor on the V4 website and remained convinced when I re-visited Blackheath Flooring this was the perfect choice.”

The unique modern tones of the Deco collection are created using specialist colouring techniques. The top layer of oak is brushed to lightly reduce and soften the natural grain, and then wood lye is hand applied which gently bleaches the oak surface before coloured oils are applied. This technique creates the deep lustred colours, and the Frozen Umber finish offers a slightly washed out oak surface infused with darker grains to add tone and texture. Having selected the floors for the new master bedroom, Angela also decided to replace the old floor boards in her 3 year old son’s bedroom and finish the upstairs landing in the same wood floors, and once the conversion was complete Blackheath Flooring completed the installation.

“I really am so happy with the finished floor. It’s perfect against the simple white tones we have used in these spaces and adds the perfect layer of subtle warmth. The floors are also really high quality, durable and so easy to keep clean – especially essential for a child’s room. My plan is to gradually install the same floors in the rest of the bedrooms and then throughout the hall and living spaces downstairs so we have the same modern flooring style running throughout our home. It works so well with our lifestyle and interior style and I can’t wait to have it all finished.
