Eiger Oak Brushed & Oiled floors chosen for their natural and durable wood finish in busy family home
This family home in Ash, Surrey was originally a 1960’s bungalow, converted into a double storey chalet style home when new owner Norman Bath and his family moved in over ten years ago. The old wood floors in the downstairs open plan living area were now looking tired and the family were keen to update the floors. Norman got in touch with Rob at local flooring retailer Past and Present in Aldershot. "I knew Rob so got in touch to explain the type of wood floors we were thinking about. We wanted oak, but something very natural with a bit of character. Hard wearing was also key to the brief. Rob sent me a batch of samples, and it was V4’s Eiger Collection Oak Brushed and Oiled wood floors that stood out to us. They had a really lovely natural finish which delivered an almost soft appearance, but with a hard wearing surface.” The Eiger Collection was designed to provide an engineered alternative to solid wood, but one that would give the same robust feel under foot as a solid floor. The planks use a thick wear layer of European oak, backed on an ultra stable hardwood multi ply tongue & grooved base. The Eiger Collection Oak Rustic Brushed and Natural Oiled floors are 18mm thick with a 4mm oak top layer, which is sanded and then machine finished with a series of steel brushes which remove the soft grain, leaving a textured hardwood surface that is both wonderfully tactile and extremely hard wearing. This floor is finished with coats of hardwax oil which keeps the hardwood surface protected from stains and wear whilst maintaining a natural look and feel.
"We have a very busy house with three boys, two dogs and as a roofer I can come home pretty mucky most days. The floors originally here when we moved in were showing wear and looking tired, so we were keen to upgrade and find a more modern engineered oak floor that would look great, but also be more durable to withstand the high footfall in our home."
Past and Present completed the installation of the new wood floors. Quick and straightforward, the old boards and skirting were removed, new wood floor underlay laid, and then the new flooring was installed throughout the hall, living and kitchen areas. New skirting was then applied for a really neat finish. The home now features an impressive and light open hallway, which leads through to an open plan family kitchen and living space. The floors accentuate the feeling of space and natural light in these areas and create a seamless flow.
“We are really impressed with the floors. Not only have they brightened up the living areas and look modern and natural, which is what we wanted, but we love the subtle character which adds interest to the space. They are also coping really well with the high traffic in our home.
“Rob gave us the Woods Good cleaning kit when he finished installing the floors and it really does make it so quick and easy to keep them clean. A quick spray and wipe with the micro fibre cloth and they are gleaming like new again. And we know the cleaner is 100% safe so won’t damage the floors. Having the new modern floors completed has spurred the family on, and they are now starting to redecorate to complete the fresh modern look throughout the home.”
