Galina Frost, Cobham

Transforming a charming 1970’s house in Cobham using V4 TH110 in Misty Grey, to create a warm and inviting family home design.

Tucked away in the Cobham countryside a major renovation project took place to create a dream family home from the foundations of a dated 1970s-built house. Documented by Channel 5’s Build Your Dream Home in the Country, Galina had a long wish list planned for this project, including changing the shape of the roof, extending the house in two directions and converting the loft space. Using  Misty Grey from our Tundra Herringbone collection, Galina was able to completely transform the outdates interiors inherited from the previous homeowners, including “avocado bathrooms and fluffy thick pile carpets”,  and in its place, create a design that not only reflected Galina’s taste, but created a beautiful and hardwearing space for the whole family to enjoy.

“We really wanted a social space for everyday family life as well as for hosting and entertaining. On the exterior, we wanted to give the house a lot more character and were drawn to Neo-Georgian and Neo-Classical house designs when looking for inspiration.”

When discussing the design journey and where inspiration was drawn from for the project, Galina shared:

“Our main source of inspiration for the house came from a combination of interior design magazines, Instagram and visiting as many supplier showrooms as possible! When we first started the renovation journey, I created a home Instagram account and saved inspiration images by room category in separate folders – this made it really quick and easy to look up and refer back to the inspiration images when visiting suppliers.”

When deciding what flooring to use in her home, Galina visited our Surrey Design Centre in Horsell. There, she met with one of our flooring experts, who guided her through our collections and helped her choose the perfect floor for her home renovation.

“I initially came across V4 Wood Flooring on Instagram and fell in love with their selection of herringbone oak flooring. We ordered some samples and then visited the Surrey Design Centre to see the products on a bigger scale. We were blown away by the choice of flooring available and took away more samples. I found it really helpful to look at the samples in situ in each of the rooms – the influence of natural lighting is so important when picking the colours and textures in flooring as it has a strong impact on how the room is perceived and can make a room feel warm or cold.”

When contemplating the best flooring solution, Galina chose TH110 Misty Grey Herringbone from our Tundra Herringbone collection. Finished with a UV-colored oil that enhances the natural grain, Misty Grey delivers a contemporary oak design inspired by nature. Its durable wear layer ensures long-lasting beauty and resilience, making it an ideal choice for modern family homes. What’s more, Misty Grey is also available in a plank and herringbone, perfect for creating a seamless design throughout your home! Discover the Tundra collection and order your free samples here.

When talking us through her decision to use TH110 Misty Grey Herringbone Galina went on to explain…

“We chose the Misty Grey strip herringbone for our master bedroom and dressing room because we felt the colour of the wood worked well with our dark furniture whilst adding a warmer undertone to the overall colour palette of the room. We also used the Misty Grey in our formal lounge laid in a herringbone pattern, to add interest and intricacy to the floor. We’re yet to style the room with furniture, but we have been using the space for parties and the kids love having their own mini ballroom for games and dance parties! Unlike tiled flooring, the Misty Grey is a lot softer and warmer to walk on barefoot which makes this an ideal choice for families with young children who are forever taking their socks off!

From an interior design perspective, the herringbone pattern is said to elongate a room visually by guiding the eye in a specific direction – with this in mind, we laid the v-pattern pointing towards the direction of the headboard in the master bedroom, thereby drawing the eye towards that central feature in the room. Unlike some other flooring trends, herringbone patterns have been used a lot in history, hopefully making it a design choice that’s less likely to appear dated in years to come.”

The finished design is a stunning classic contemporary style home, keeping the aesthetic minimal and uncluttered throughout to allow elements like the flooring to add interest and colour. When discussing her favourite room in the house Galina said “I really love the design of the nursery bedroom, which is the smallest bedroom in the house! The room has a rustic chic aesthetic with white-washed oak furniture, a subtle safari theme and accent shades of baby blue.”
