Detached Surrey Home creates a modern design with V4âs Bespoke Impressions collection
Last year, Kim Maher and her partner embarked on the second renovation to their detached Surrey home of twenty years, with an aim to create a modern interior that provided a homely feel all year round. This renovation saw an extension to rear of the property, as Kim explained: âOur home is a 1950s detached property in Pyrford. Weâve lived here for almost 20 years and recently completed our second renovation to the property. This 8-month project included a reconstruction of the rear of the property to provide a new modern kitchen and rear-facing living room, alongside an extensive refurbishment of our existing accommodation and a new garden patio area.â When it came to the design, the goal was simple, to create bright and modern feel throughout the home. The renovation created a south-facing living room, whereby in the summer you could open the bi-fold doors and allow the garden patio to become an extension of the room, whilst in the winter, the warmth brought by our bespoke wood floors create a homely feel, as Kim describedâŠ
âWe wanted to create a bright, modern feel which flowed through the house, complementing renovations to the adjoining rooms and hallway. The new rear living room opens out into the garden to create a lovely living space in the summer months, but we also needed to ensure a warm, homely feel for the winter months too.â
When it came to the flooring, Kim went through Surrey Floors and Doors, an approved V4 Retailer located in Brookwood who were able to assist the couple in their search for a high-quality wood floor. Wanting to look at the entire V4 collection, including bespoke flooring solutions, the couple then visited the Surrey Design Centre in search for their dream floorâŠ
âWe love the natural colours in this wood and the high-quality finish. We wanted a floor that would wear well but didnât compromise on a long-lasting natural look and feel. We knew that an oak based floor would provide the right solution for us. The Surrey Design Centre gave us a great opportunity to explore the V4 Flooring range and our final choice stood out as soon as we saw it!â
In the end, Kim chose IM301 Monet, a bespoke floor from our made-to-order collection Impressions Aged. Made in Europe, this floor is filled with character as the solid oak wear layer goes through several processes before being finished with a hardwearing oil, for the durable yet natural finish the couple desired. Ranging from 1500mm to 2500mm in length, these u-bevelled planks are the perfect choice for the south-facing lounge, as they draw your eye along the wood and out to the connecting patio. Whilst the reactive stains and colour oils produce a natural colourway that creates a rustic-modern style that can easily transition with the change of the seasons, as Kim explains was important for the designâŠ
âWe already have a north-facing living room with a traditional open fireplace so when creating this new south-facing room we wanted something quite different. With bi-folding doors into the garden during the summer months there is a lovely open and bright feel to the room, yet in the winter months it is warm and homely. We wanted to capitalise on its south facing aspect to create a bright living space all-year round. The media wall was something we designed ourselves and we worked closely with our various suppliers to ensure all the components came together seamlessly. We really love the versatility of this room as well as its good looks.â
The end result was a beautiful contemporary design that could easily transition from a light and airy summer design through to a warm and welcoming winter home. The School House White Farrow and Ball paint aided in the creation of a bright living space, whilst the bespoke Daval media wall was finished in Farrow & Ballâs Drop Cloth, adding depth to the design.
